Club-Sandwich
The original Club-sandwich, also called a clubhouse sandwich or dubble-decker, is a sandwich with two layers of fillings between 3 slices of bread. The sandwich is filled with cooked chicken breast and bacon, along with fresh tomatoes and lettuce.
Nowadays you can find the club sandwich all over the world. It is most time served with either potato-chips or french-fries. Most restaurants create their own special club-sandwich. The ingredient vary but the three layer toasted bread is almost everywhere the same.
You can find the club-sandwich with different fillings like turkey, roast beef or chicken. On top of the toasted bread, Mayonnaise and honey musterd are common condiments. Ham or cheese are often added nowadays on top of the lettuce and tomato.
The sandwich appeared for the first time in 1894 at the famous Saratoga Club-House (a men only gambling house in upstate Saratoga Springs, New York) where also the potato chip was invented. This on of the more popular theories. maybe the sandwich got so popular because the English king Edward VIII of England and his wife were big fans of the sandwich.
At the world fair in 1904 the sandwich started to grow in popularity. Four restaurants at the fair created their own version and presented them on their menu. With so many getting in contact with this sandwich the sandwich was wide spread around the country and beyond.
